Lake Moultrie’s reputation as a world-class fishery stems from its diverse ecosystem and structure. Spanning more than 60,000 acres, the lake features everything from shallow, stump-filled swamps and vegetated zones like the Hatchery to vast, open stretches reaching depths of 75 feet near the Pinopolis Dam. This variety, paired with a mild climate that allows for year-round fishing, creates ideal conditions for numerous prized game fish.

  • Blue Catfish (plus Channel and Flathead)

Top Fishing Spots Around Lake Moultrie

Knowing where to start on this massive lake can make all the difference. Here are some key areas accessible from Lake Moultrie RV Park & Marina:

  • Diversion Canal. This 6.5-mile channel connects Lakes Marion and Moultrie. It’s considered a fish ‘highway’ for spring stripers, but its edges, cuts, and structure hold bass. Diversion Canal is best fished by boat, with access ramps like Canal Lakes Fish Camp nearby.
  • Pinopolis Dam Area. The deep water near the dam, along with the rip-rap lining its edges, attracts stripers and bass. The tailrace below the dam can also be productive. This area is primarily suited for boat fishing.
  •  The Hatchery (near Moncks Corner). A 2,200-acre vegetated haven perfect for bass and bream, The Hatchery offers an easily accessible public boat ramp. It’s excellent for boat fishing, with limited bank access available near the ramp.
  • North Lake Shoreline (near Cross, SC). Expansive shallow flats with stumps and logs near our park are great for bass, especially during early morning and late evening in summer. Best accessed by boat via nearby ramps like Fred L Day or Amos Lee Gourdine.

Tip: While some shore fishing is available, including at the pier at Fred L. Day ramp, a boat significantly expands your access to Lake Moultrie’s diverse habitats. Consider using Google Maps satellite view to scout potential shoreline structure and access points before your trip.
